These are the songs of the singing cowboys, the archetypal cowboy hero of Western films in the 1930s and 1940s. We still sing some traditional cowboy songs today, but many of what we now call cowboy songs were written by or for the singing cowboys themselves, to showcase the white-hatted heroes’ ability to share their feelings through song.
